On September 28, 2007 GotGhost.net will visit the infamous Rolling Hills Country Mall in Bethany, NY. Jenn will be joining Stacey Jones and her group (Central New York Ghost Hunters) to investigate this huge structure. Many thanks go out to Stacey for her kind and generous offer. We've been wanting to do this one for a LOOONNGG time.
In 1826 Genesse County acquired this property (a former stagecoach inn) and a large parcel of land surrounding it (now Genesse Co. Park) to house those who could not care for themselves. The poor, the elderly, orphans, transients, and the insane lived and worked here together. If you were able bodied you were put to work on the farm. The growing facility became almost completely self sufficient. It operated in this manner until the 1950's when it became, for the most part, a nursing home.
In 1974 the facility was shut down and most of the buildings were destroyed. In 1992 it was reopened as Carriage Village, a museum and gift shop. In 2002 Jeff & Lori Carlson purchased the property. It wasn't long before they realized this building had a story to tell. They opened Rolling Hills Country Mall (now closed )-:) and later began offering history tours and ghost hunts (still available). Jeff & Lori reside on the property in a former maintenance building that was converted to a house in 1995.
More to come...
