Equipment used in the field of paranormal studies

While there are many common and not so common items listed here we must emphasize that there are NO instruments designed to detect or record paranormal activity. All items listed here have, now or in the past, been adapted for such use. They are designed to record/detect everyday, ordinary events. We will list their common use along with their use in the field of paranormal studies.

Still Cameras

Common Use: This is self explanatory. Used to take photographs.

Paranormal Use: Probably the most common item in a ghost hunters tool bag. Some people have their preference, but be it digital or film, just about any camera will do. The advantage to digital is that you can view your results instantly. The downfall to digital is the results can be easily altered.

Video Cameras

Common Use: Again, self explanatory. Used to capture video footage.

Paranormal Use: Another common item in a ghost hunters tool bag.

EMF MetersEMF Meter

 

Common Use: To measure naturally occurring electromagnetic fields. These can come from many sources including electric or battery powered objects such as televisions, cell phones, cameras, or microwaves. They can also come from the electrical circuitry in the walls of a building, or even the earths natural magnetic field. Unshielded cables in a home can give off large EMFs which can cause headaches, stomach upset and even hallucinations. These can become very dangerous if left untreated and symptoms can become severe and possibly irreversible.

Paranormal Use: Some researchers believe spirits can generate an electromagnetic field in the process of manifestation. In conjunction with other data (cold spots, anomalous photographs or video) this can lend credence to the possibility of a location being haunted. Locations should be checked for base levels before considering any spike to be abnormal.

Audio RecordersAudio Recorder

 

Common Use: Again, self explanatory. Used to record dictation or other audio events.

Paranormal Use: Another common item. Used to capture EVP (electronic voice phenomena - discussed elsewhere on this site) and to record the teams activity while on location. Recorders come in digital (shown) and analog (use magnetic tapes) format. While either will get the job done, digital recorders are more convenient because they're generally smaller, require no other media for recording and are easier to transfer to a computer for further analysis.

Motion Detectors

Common Use: Detects movement in a specific area.

Common Use: Senses temperature variations in the environment and/or heavy machinery.

Common Use: Detects moisture content of a specific area.
