Legends of Central Virginia

Centre Hill, Petersburg

Centre Hill MansionLocated at the top of a hill that overlooks the river, near the police station.

Built in 1823 by Robert Bolling, this house has seen it's share of activity by the living.

Reported Activity: Every January 24th at 7:30pm a group of soldiers come in the front door and asend the stairs to a room above. About 20 minutes later they return the way they came and slam the door behind them. This occurred first in 1866, one year after a regimen stormed through the house as they retreated the area. The rest of the year this home is haunted by a young woman who has been seen in an upstairs window. She has also been said to pull the covers off of persons sleeping in an upstairs bedroom.

GG Report: We visited this location January 24th, 2006. No ghostly activity to report. No soldiers passed us by in the foyer. It was a very spirited night with a wonderful group of story tellers though.

The Evergreen Motel, Hopewell

Evergreen MotelLocated on the left as you cross the bridge into Hopewell on Rt. 10.

Reported Activity: On Christmas Eve a newly wed couple is supposed to appear in an unconfirmed room said to be on the first floor, close to the water. The couple, former guest at the hotel, appears soaking wet. They were victims of a terrible bus accident that happened in the 30's.

GG Report: Urban legend. The events and places involved don't synch up. (Thanks for the help on this one T!) Yes, there was a bus accident on the morning of December 22, 1935. Brake failure caused a Greyhound bus with 14 people on board to crash through an open draw bridge. The bus plunged into 30 feet of icy water. There were no survivors. The motel wasn't built until later so the couple could not have been guest. To the best of our knowledge there was no newly wed couple on the bus.

Central State Hospital, Dinwiddie
